Why Sorrel exists
The system wasn't built with women in mind. Sorrel was.
ADHD and autism diagnostic criteria were developed almost entirely based on research into boys and men. Women present differently — with masking, internalised symptoms, and exhaustion from decades of being misunderstood. The result? An average wait of over 3 years, widespread misdiagnosis, and a profound sense of being invisible to the system.
Sorrel bridges that gap — a free directory and information hub connecting women to therapists, clinics, and guides that were built for them.

📖 Plain language · No jargon
Understand what's actually available to you
The UK system for ADHD and autism diagnosis is confusing and underfunded. These guides explain your options plainly — so you can make the decision that's right for you.
🧠 Information only — not medical advice
🔍 What is an ADHD or autism assessment?
An assessment is a structured process carried out by a qualified clinician to determine whether you meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD, autism, or both. For ADHD it typically includes a clinical interview and standardised questionnaires. For autism it often includes additional tools like the ADOS-2 observation schedule.
A good assessment follows NICE guidelines and results in a written diagnostic report you can share with your GP, employer, or educational institution.
♀️ Why is it harder for women to get diagnosed?
ADHD and autism diagnostic criteria were developed almost entirely based on research into boys and men. Women typically present with more internalised symptoms, stronger masking, and fewer visible signs of hyperactivity.
Being told you're "anxious" or "just stressed" rather than assessed
Misdiagnosis with depression, BPD, or eating disorders
Being dismissed because you "don't seem like you have ADHD"
Years of exhaustion from masking symptoms to appear "normal"
Symptoms worsening during hormonal changes — periods, pregnancy, perimenopause
✅Over half of adult women wait more than a year for assessment, with many waiting over 3 years — and gender bias is a recurring barrier throughout the process.
⏳ How long does it take?
NHS standard pathway: 2–10+ years in many areas
NHS Right to Choose: typically 4–28 weeks
Private assessment: usually 2–6 weeks from enquiry to report
⚠️As of December 2025, there were 735,000 open ADHD assessment referrals in England, with 61% of adults already waiting more than a year.
🏥 What is NHS Right to Choose?
Right to Choose (RTC) is a legal right in England that allows you to ask your GP to refer you to any qualified NHS-contracted provider — not just your local service, which may have a much longer wait.
ℹ️Right to Choose is only available in England. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have different systems.
📋 How to use Right to Choose — step by step
Check your eligibilityYou must be registered with a GP in England and not currently receiving ADHD care from an NHS mental health service.
Find a Right to Choose providerUse our assessment finder to find providers who accept RTC referrals. Check their current wait times before choosing.
Complete an ADHD self-report formDownload the ASRS form, fill it in, and take it to your GP appointment as evidence of your symptoms.
Ask your GP for a Right to Choose referralSay specifically: "I'd like to exercise my Right to Choose and be referred to [provider name]." Your GP must refer you if they agree assessment is appropriate.
Wait to be contactedThe provider will contact you within a few weeks to confirm your place and send questionnaires.
Attend your assessmentUsually online, lasting 1–2 hours. You'll receive a diagnostic report afterwards.
⚠️Some ICBs have placed restrictions on Right to Choose. If your GP says it's not available, ask them to put this in writing — it may not be accurate.

💡Many clinics offer payment plans. A combined assessment is usually cheaper than booking two separately.
✅ Will my GP accept a private diagnosis?
Yes, in most cases. A private diagnosis from a GMC-registered clinician following NICE guidelines should be accepted for NHS shared care — meaning your GP can take over prescribing after your private provider stabilises your treatment.
Before booking, ask the clinic: "Is your diagnosis recognised for NHS shared care?" Reputable clinics will confirm this clearly.
🔒 Do I need a GP referral for private?
No. You can book a private assessment directly without a GP referral. This is one of the main advantages of going private — you don't need to convince your GP first.
♀️ How does ADHD present differently in women?
The "classic" picture — hyperactive, disruptive, can't sit still — describes how it tends to appear in boys. Women and girls are far more likely to experience:
Inattentive symptoms — daydreaming, difficulty finishing tasks, losing things
Masking — hiding symptoms to appear "normal," which leads to burnout
Anxiety and depression — often developed as a result of undiagnosed ADHD
Perfectionism — using rigid control to compensate for executive function difficulties
Hormonal fluctuation — symptoms often worsen during periods, pregnancy, and perimenopause
✦ What about AuDHD?
Autism and ADHD frequently co-occur, especially in women. Estimates suggest 50–70% of autistic people also have ADHD. AuDHD in women is particularly likely to be missed because the presentations can mask each other.
✦If you suspect you may have both, ask specifically for a combined assessment — it's usually no more expensive than two separate ones.
✅ I've been diagnosed — what happens next?
Medication (if ADHD)Your assessing clinician may prescribe directly. If private, they'll usually stabilise your dose before transferring to your GP via shared care.
Therapy or coachingMany people find therapy helps process the diagnosis and develop practical strategies. Use our therapist directory to find a specialist.
Workplace adjustmentsShare your diagnostic report with your employer and request reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010.
Benefits and supportA diagnosis may support PIP, Access to Work funding, or educational accommodations.
CommunityADHD UK, the Autistic Girls Network, and ADHD Women's Wellbeing are all good starting points.
🌿 Remember
Getting a diagnosis doesn't change who you are. It gives you language for something that was always there — and access to support you've always deserved. Take your time processing it.
